Sakada statue unveiled

As part of the opening events ofthe Filipino centennial celebration, a statue depicting a sakada(migrant farm worker) was unveiled during ceremonies at the former siteof the Ola'a Plantation in Ke'aau, Big Island on Satuday, December 17,2005. The first 15 Filipino sakadas who were recruited by the HSPA in1906 were assigned to the Ola'a Plantation.

The ceremonies, which was open to thepublic, started at 10:00 a.m. and attended by Governor Linda Lingle,Mayor Harry Kim of the Big Island, state legislators, Hawaii countycouncil members, members of the Filipino Centennial CelebrationCommission, and other dignitaries. The unveiling ceremonies wasfollowed by lunch and cultural entertainment at 8 1/2 mile, a one-timeFilipino camp during the plantation days.
