INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE ISSUES CALL FOR PAPERS
The International Conference and Trade Expo Committee is announcing the first call for papers and presentation. The conference is scheduled on Dec. 13-17, 2006. Part of it will run into the Closing Ceremonies of the Centennial Year on Dec. 16-17. According to committee chair Belinda Aquino, the conference will address the centennial theme, One Hundred Years and Beyond, and is expected to draw participants, Filipinos and non-Filipinos, from the Philippines, the United States and from various international communities.
Topics could include, but not limited to, the following:
* Places of origin of the first sakadas in Hawaii (Visayas, Ilocos, Central Luzon, etc.)
* Labor recruitment practices of the Hawaii Sugar Planters' Association
* Filipinos in Hawaii Prior to 1906
* Conditions in the Philippines prior to recruitment (after Philippine-American war, etc.)
* Conditions on the sugar plantations in Hawaii (Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Oahu, etc.)
* Filipino labor strikes in Hawaii (1920s, 30s, 40s, etc.)
* Immigration waves from the Philippines before and after WW II
* The annexation of the Philippines and Hawaii by the U.S.
* Post-1965 immigration to Hawaii and U.S. from the Philippines
* Social and Political Movements among Filipinos in America
* Early Filipino communities on continental U.S. (California, Oregon, Louisiana, Washington, etc.)
* Filipino communities in other continents ( Middle East, Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe)
* Globalization and Gender Issues in Filipino International Migration
* Assessment of the Filipino experience in Hawaii after 100 years
* The balikbayan experience and foreign remittances to the Philippines
* Returning Filipinos for retirement, business and other purposes
* Filipinos in U.S. local, state and national politics
* Entrepreneurship in Filipino communities overseas
* Language, arts, science, education and the professions in Filipino communities overseas
* Filipino cultural preservation in international settings

* Filipino organizations in Hawaii
* Filipinos in the U.S. armed services
*The future of Filipino communities overseas
The conference is broadly conceived and any topic which can be reasonably related to the centennial theme will be considered, but there is no guarantee of acceptance, according to Aquino. Priority will be given to panel proposals, that is, a proponent should already have a full panel of 3-4 presenters on a particular focus. It would be good, for instance, to have panels like: Comparative Filipino Communities Overseas, and speakers can talk about Australia, the Middle East, Europe, etc. Of course, individual proposals, especially those strongly connected o the theme, will also be considered.
If the date (December 2006) is not suitable for you, there will be other conferences/ conventions in Hawaii over the year that potential participants can attend, sponsored by: the Philippine Nurses Association in America (PNAA), the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA - which has both a networking global convention and empowerment conference), the Association of Asian American Journalist (AAJA), etc. In this way everyone will be given an opportunity to come to Hawaii at their convenience to participate in the yearlong centennial celebration. Exact dates are being worked out by respective sponsors which will be making announcements from time to time.
No travel assistance to potential participants in the conference will be provided. A hotel package, possibly for 5 days (from Wed to Sun) and registration details, are being worked out. Pre-registration will be preferred.
